Woodturner : FRANZ KEIHOFER (Germany)

Size in cm: 18,5x7

Wood: Ash

One of Franz's representative works. He does not cut down trees to create his works, but uses trees that have been obtained due to reasons such as the risk of them falling. We are selling live edge bowls that have the bark of the tree left intact. The shapes that have been created using advanced wood turning techniques are truly impressive.
The style is characterized by leaving the bark of the trunk on the edge of the bowl, preserving the tree rings and layered colors of each tree species, and the scenery that shows the tree's history. It's easy to imagine from the image, but you'll be surprised when you understand that it is cut from the side of the trunk.
The creation process begins with looking at the characteristics of each item and imagining how to capture them in a tangible form.
He told us that his wish was to feel nature in his daily life.

-About the work

The surface of the bowl is coated with natural oil. It is primarily used as a decorative object, or to store small items or packaged sweets or fruit.

If you put oily foods such as food ingredients, nuts, or coffee beans in the pot, the color may transfer. If you want to enjoy the change over time, it is best to try it out little by little. We do not recommend putting things like cooking sauces in the pot because they have a strong smell and oily content.

-STORY

Born in 1987 on a farm in Bischofswiesen, a small town in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, I grew up in a picturesque landscape of lush green meadows surrounded by forests and mountains. Having lived on the same land as my family for generations, I felt a deep connection to the nature around me from an early age.

After graduating from secondary school, I did an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic on board a ship, completing my qualification as a craftsman. I then went straight back to school to get my A-levels and started studying Engineering Science at university. I dropped out in my second term due to mental health issues.

While I was recovering, I started woodworking as a hobby. With no experience, I spent the last of my savings to buy a lathe and tools. Within hours, I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was too exhausted to climb the stairs to my apartment, but I was fine sitting at the lathe all day.

Two years later, in December 2010, I officially started working as a self-employed woodturner. I am completely self-taught and have no formal training.
I'm a passionate photographer, nature lover and music lover, and woodturning is the last thing I think about at night and the first thing I think about in the morning.
